Rottweiler Training – 5 Tips For the Beginner

Rottweiler training begins when your dog is a puppy but you must not forget that this will grow into a big powerful dog and training should be tailored to that.

This breed is often used in security work but there are many Rottweilers living very happily in domestic situations.

Rottweiler training should begin by getting your dog used to other humans and other dogs. You need to ensure that your dog is comfortable in its surroundings. This breed needs to be treated with love and respect and the rewards will be considerable.

When you commence – once you are comfortable with the idea that this will be a loving loyal family pet and not some out of control hooligan – you will find training easier. Rottweilers can sometimes get distracted in unfamiliar places especially when they are young, so keep the training sessions to a quiet place and time at least in the beginning.

This can be an aggressive breed so it is important to train it sensitively and all good rottweiler training should start with the simplest commands like sit and stay. Bear in mind that this can be a breed that tries to dominate so be assertive and reward good behavior.

As you get your dog used to you and your family, introduce it to friends and get them to accompany you occasionally when you are training.

1. Dogs do not learn overnight. Just because your dog sat down on command at the beginning of the week,doesn’t mean that he will do so at the end of the week, at least in the early days.

2. Make training fun. It needs to have some sort of structure but it also needs to be something you and your pet enjoy. Vary your rottweiler training to keep it fresh.Keep it regular but short when the dog is young, 10-15 mins for a puppy and up to 30 or 40 minutes a day for an older dog, until you are sure that they have grasped it.

3. Keep a structure and keep it fun. Rottweiler training should be carried out regularly and should be kept to around 10 or 15 minutes for puppies and 30 or 40 minutes for an older dog.

4. Give praise and reward and show pleasure when your dog has performed successfully. Do not over discipline when your dog has failed however or he might begin to hate being trained.

5. Rottweiler training should follow a natural progression like other dog training. If you teach your dog to sit first, it will be easier to teach him to stay and then to lie down.
