History:

The ancestry of Boxer traces back to atleast 500 years ago when Germans adored two distinct breeds, the Bullenbeisser (bull-baiter) and the Barenbeisser(bear-baiter). The Bullenbeisser is believed to be the closest ancestor of Boxer.Friederich vom Fleming in 1719 described the Bullenbeisseras of medium size but heavily built with clipped (i.e.cropped) ears and tail. The Bullenbeiser was trained to hold the fiery bull by his nostrils and never to let it go. These bull baiting shows continued till the middle of 19th century when this cruel sport was outlawed in most of Europe. As contests of blood and pain vanished so did the interest, and the breed’s aristocratic connections were lost. It was transformed into a butchers’ dog, showing its usefulness around slaughterhouses for gathering cattle. Its indiginous undershot gripped so hard at the steer’s nostrils, that a stick was often used to open the jaw.
The Deutscher Boxer Club was formed in 1895, and the first studbook was published in 1904 with the club gazette “Boxer Blatter“. Popularity of the breed rose to the other side of the Atlantic, and the first American champion Dampf vom Dom finished his title in 1915. Some of the very best specimen from the initial years were exported to USA that not only proved their worth in the show ring but also passed their strongest of virtues in their offspring.Ch. Warlord of Mazelaine, the grandson of sieger Sigurd vom Dom became the first ever Boxer to clinch Best in Show at the auspicious Westminster Show, New York
